Wonderful writing

In the beginning ....                           and now!                                        

At writing time we are learning to experiment with new types of punctuation, such as commas and speech marks.

“Actually I am a great story writer now. I can do long  stories with lots of interesting words.”

Wild animal tee shirts

I am learning to sketch a wild animal and transfer my drawing to a tee shirt.  I used special fabric markers to colour in my design.

Number line subtraction

I am learning to use a number line to help solve subtraction problems to 20.

"I can count backwards to work out subtraction problems.  I put the biggest number first.
Sometimes I can do it in my head" said Hadi

Reading out loud

We are learning to read out loud familiar poems. We are trying to read with fluency and expression. As we get more confident, we can pay attention to the author's punctuation to help our reading sound more interesting.

"I can sound out words I don't know when I read out loud. I can read loudly so everyone can hear" said Hadi.

Reading

I am learning to use all my strategies independently. I am able to read the book independently and I can find the main ideas in the text.

"I can read faster because I read carefully" said Hadi

Measuring Fun

We were learning to compare similar objects that differ only in length. We were experimenting  with learning to measure with non-standard units.  We were learning to have an accurate starting and finishing point when we measure and use measuring language. 

"It is important to count carefully. I think measuring is a bit easy."

Phonics Time

Phonics lessons are a very important part of our Writing programme.

As I get more confident I try tricker things. In this photo I listened to a dictated sentence and then tried to write down what I heard and put in the correct punctuation. 

"I have to remember to always  do fullstops and capital letters and finger spaces. I am doing very well at this."

Rocket ship

We have been learning about the solar system this term.  We made a rocket with paper and a straw then blew through the straw to see how far our rocket would travel.  

Contractions

I am learning to recognise contractions. I know that contractions have apostrophes to replace missing letters.

" A contraction is two words joined together and one or two or three pop out and a mark is left to say that the letters are not there."  said Hadi

Owl Babies

We are learning to publish our writing for an audience, because we are authors. In Room 3 we try to present our work in many different and interesting ways to encourage people to come and read our fabulous stories!

" I can use wow words so my story is great" said Hadi.

Making sets of ten

Matariki

Our classroom celebrated Matariki, which is the Maori New Year. We came to school in our pyjamas and had a yummy breakfast together! It is great to share time with our whanau.

"I was a bit late, but i could still have my breakfast. It was fun to do!"

Retelling

I am learning to retell a story so that I can say what is happening in the story.

"I can go back and read it again when it doesn't sound right" said Hadi

Story Writing

"I need to do no capital letters in the middle of my sentence anymore." said Hadi

Groupings with 5

I am learning to know the sum of 5 and any other number to 5.  I know to start with 5 in my head and count on.   I am able to do this without help from materials.

" I can put 5 in my head and then count on to the number on the dice." said Hadi

Tread Lightly Caravan visit

The Tread lightly Caravan visit was teaching us that the environment is everything around us in nature and that the environment is really important for us to live (trees for oxygen, water to drink, plants for food etc.) so we need to look after it.

"I was putting in lots of seeds. We are going to look after the plant so we can eat it."

Wiggly Worms

We were learning about our Worm farm and how to look after it. All the leftover fruit and vegetables in the worm bucket feeds the worms. 

Hadi said, " I can pick up the worm with a stick, not my hand. It moves a lot."
